Brief
Aimed at next year’s students, communicate the personality of four different typefaces demonstrating the exploration of different formal qualities.
Concept and Outcome
Creating tangible cut letters enabled the analysis of different sets of letterforms as 3D items. Through experimentation with photography, the character and personality of different typefaces is shown via positive and negative shapes, shadows and layers. Attention is drawn to how the form of each letter interacts with another, and their negative and positive shapes accentuated. Photographs taken during these experiments form the central imagery of the book. Layering of tracing paper pages encourages the reader to consider the letters as they turn the page and layer them on opaque printed pages. Further imagery can be seen on my blog.
